look," a nasty storm brings treacherous blizzard conditions south. president obama cuts his christmas vacation short for the fiscal cliff. and the longest high speed train. good morning. i'm richard lui. christmas was anything but merry for residents of the deep south. christmas packed a deadly punch. three residents are victims of the storm that hit four states as far south as texas. >> oh, wow, oh jr, look at that tornado. >> reporter: in mobile, alabama, a christmas surprise no one wished for right in this city center. it left lots of damage in its wa wake, blowing out first and second floor windows at the

medical center and the roof at the high school. there are no deaths but tens of thousands are without electricity. it sent customers running for cover. >> he looked out the windows and said there is a tornado coming. i looked out, saw the debris flying around, got everybody and the customers an said, we need to run to the back and everybody huddle down. >> i probably hurt my baby grabbing her running for protection. there was no time. >> reporter: the twister was from a massive storm that stretched across the nation. earlier, a tornado touched down near mcneil, mississippi and sever people were hurt with minor injuries. and one destroyed a feed store and in texas, a driver was killed trying to remove another limb from the road and it caused

a white christmas in the dallas area and in lubbock, texas looked like a winter wonderland. it could cause more problems later in the week as it moves east. birmingham, alabama. >> dillon will tell us where the storm is in a few minutes. stick around for that. lawmakers have one more day of vacation before returning to capitol hill tomorrow for one more day of solving the fiscal cliff before the new year. and president obama has cut his vacation one day short and heading back today. does it still look doable? >> there is hope for a deal but confidence in that grand bargain has already but disappeared. >> reporter: americans are already taking a hard look at their wallets as confidence in the fiscal cliff diminishes.

>> i don't think there is a grand bargain but hope a deal will be cut. >> reporter: if congress doesn't change tax cuts in day, middle income earners will owe extra by the end of the year and they will cut back on auto industry, apparel and entertainment. >> once they cut back on that, that will be dramatic. >> reporter: retailers support 1 in 4 american jobs and if the downturn intensifies, those jobs are at risk. >> if retailers stop creating jobs, the economy as a whole stops creating jobs. >> reporter: the weight is excruciating for some and president obama left them $200 billion apart. >> the president was $200 billion higher on revenues and speaker boehner, $200 billion higher on spending cuts.

his grandmother more than 30 years ago shot at first responders who arrived at his burning house, spreading this six other homes. >> we are being shot at multiple firing. i am shot. i think he's using an assault rifle. >> he was equipped to go to war to killed innocent people. >> reporter: the gunman was well fortified with a . .38 caliber handgun, 12 gauge shotgun and bushmaster, the same as in the connecticut shooting. two firefighters were killed and two others hospitalized. spangler, police say, killed himself. they revealed human remains were found in spangler's burned house and authorities suspect they belong to his missing sister. >> motive is always the burning question and we will never know what was going through his mind. >> reporter: police are investigating whether the death of his 91-year-old mother in october and donation she made to the fire department could help

explain the motive for his christmas eve shootings. former president w.h. bush remains in the hospital this morning where he spent christmas wes his wife, barbara bush as well as family members. the former first president suffered setbacks and why they could not release him as hoped to do originally. the former 88-year-old president was hospitalized for what was initially described as a bronchitis type cough. in the weeks since, he's become weak and developed a fever and cautiously are optimistic he will fully recover. as always, when we talk about tornadoes, they're surprising. >> yes. especially with the type of storm we're seeing because it is bringing blizzard conditions to other parts of the country. we're talking about reports of 19 tornadoes yesterday and that

whole set of severe storms continue toe spread east today. you see the rotation through eastern tennessee, the area of low pressure, a big one, strong storm bringing significant snowfall to southern illinois and southern indiana. here's your chance of severe weather through southeastern georgia and will eventually move into the carolinas especially the coast where we would see more tornadoes develop today. heavy rain from western north carolina and to south carolina and into the albany-georgia area continues to spread eastward but we have heavy snow falling through northern indiana and will bring blizzard like conditions to portions of ohio, especially lakeshore of lake ontario as well. here's the best chance of seeing the tornadoes develop today. eastern north carolina and
